the Tileyard

This ongoing series examines the traditional coal-fired, down-draught kilns at William Blyth Ltd. in Barton-upon-Humber. Dating from around 1840, these historic kilns remain central to the company’s production and represent a rare continuation of nineteenth-century ceramic firing practices. Believed to be among the last commercially active kilns of their type in the United Kingdom, they are of considerable industrial and cultural significance. Through regular visits to the site, the project is documenting the working life of the kilns, focusing on the firing process and the physical environment. The work also includes observations of those involved in the kiln’s operation, including master potter Gabriel Nichols, whose expertise forms part of the broader continuity of knowledge at the site. The resulting body of work is developing into a photographic essay exploring the relationship between industrial heritage, craftsmanship, and the continued operation of historic kiln technology.
